Dhu'l-Hij jah  or alternatively  Zulhijja  ( Arabic : ذو الحجة‎; properly  transliterated , also called  Zil-Hajj ) is the twelfth and final month in the  Islamic calendar . It is a very sacred month in the Islamic calendar, one in which the  Hajj ( pilgrimage ) takes place as well as the Festival of the Sacrifice. " Dhu al-Hijjah " literally means " Possessor of the Pilgrimage " or " The Month of the Pilgrimage ". During this month Muslim pilgrims from all around the world congregate at  Mecca  to visit the  Kaaba . The Hajj is performed on the eighth, ninth and the tenth of this month.  Day of Arafah  takes place on the ninth of the month.  Eid al-Adha , the " Festival of the Sacrifice ", begins on the tenth day and ends on sunset of the 13th. Zakat al-Fitr

Zakat al-Fitr  is a  charity  taken for the  poor  a few days before the end of  fasting  in the  Islamic holy month  of  Ramadan . The  Arabic  word  Fitr  means the same as  iftar , breaking a fast, and it comes from the same  root word  as  Futoo  which means  breakfast . Zakat al Fitr is a smaller amount than  Zakat al-Mal . Sadaqat al-Fitr  is a duty which is  wajib  (required) of every  Muslim , whether male or female, minor or adult as long as they have the means to do so. According to Islamic tradition ( Sunnah ),  Ibn 'Umar  said that the Islamic Prophet  Muhammad  made  Zakat al-Fitr  compulsory on every  slave ,  freeman , male, female, young and old among the Muslims; one  Saa`  of dried dates or one Saa` of barley. The  head of the household  may pay the required amount for the other members. Abu Sa'eed al-Khudree said: On behalf of our young and old, free men and slaves, we used to take out during Allah's Messenger's (upon whom be God's pea

Laylat al-Qadr: A Poem

A night, a very special night The night in which occurred the revelation of the Qur’an A night in this Holy month of Ramadan A night greater than 83years A night you can be forgiven of all the sins from the past years The night in which the Qur’an was revealed before being passed on to our prophet over a period of 23years This night is the night of majesty The night of decree The night we know as Laylatul-Qadr And what makes you know the meaning of Qadr? The night that is better than a thousand months The night that can save you from Allah’s wrath The angels will descend by the will of your lord And there’s peace and tranquillity till the appearance of dawn This I believe is the greatest virtue of Ramadan This night is just one night It occurs during the least ten nights Do perform good acts so you don't let it out of sight During these last nights, you can decide to give charity Even as low as twenty or as high as fifty Just give to gain Allah’s mercy Y

An Overview of Laylatal al-Qadr: Revelation to Prophet Muhammad

Some commentators believe that the revelation of Quran occurred in phases, with the first phase being the revelation in its entirety on Laylat al-Qadr to the  angel   Gabriel  ( Jibril  in Arabic) in the lowest heaven, and then the subsequent verse-by-verse revelation to Muhammad by Gabriel.  The revelation started in 610 CE at the  Hira  cave on Mount Nur in Mecca. The first Surah that was revealed was  Sūrat al-ʿAlaq  (in Arabic  العلق ).   During the first revelation the first five verses of this Surah, or chapter, were revealed. To be continued...

An Overview of Laytal al-Qadr

Laylat al-Qadr   variously rendered in English as the Night of Decree, Night of Power, Night of Value, Night of Destiny, or Night of Measures, is, in Islamic belief, the night when the first verses of the Quran were revealed to the Islamic prophet Muhammad.[5] It is one of the nights of the last ten days of Ramadan. Muslims believe that on this night the blessings and mercy of God are abundant, sins are forgiven, supplications are accepted, and that the annual decree is revealed to the angels who also descend to earth, specially the Angel Gabriel, referred to as "the Spirit", to perform every and any errand decreed by God. Islam holds that God Almighty alone answers our supplications and that He alone receives them and forgives humanity and gives them what they ask for and that on this particular night Muslims should actively seek God's forgiveness and engage in various acts of worship.
